Last week on Monday evening I had to travel to Gatirima, one of the location s of the vast Laikipia County, in Kenya. The journey took me three hours and it was a good journey despite being packed four per a row in our public mean s of transport and also seeing a dead kitten by the road side, probably knocked down by a fast moving vehicle.
It is here that I spent my first three weekdays, doing a series of music video production that I met Pastor William. He is the pastor in charge of the congregants of AIC Gatirima and not only the congregants but also the community at large, since he has a good relationship with them as I came to understand later.
Everything was flowing so well. Stories and laughter broke the silence of the night occasionally. It was so till William told us one of the saddest yet the most powerful testimony I have heard this year. You see when William came to this area as a newly born again youth, he first realized the dominating spirit of alcoholism and immediately took it as his area of concern. One evening as he was preaching in a meeting comprising of drunk and sober people, he was cursed and threatened to die, if he would preach against alcoholism. One woman came forward and urinated in front of everyone and said that he would die, but William never stopped.
Days later, on a certain evening after escorting his girlfriend-her current wife, he met a man who had been sent to kill him. It was dark and this man meant what he said, for he hit him twice on his head with a bolt hummer, leaving the servant of God with serious wounds. William had to fake death for the man to leave him!
Luckily one of her church members was using the same road and when she saw the Pastor in such a state, she stopped and asked what was happening. People gathered around and the man took into the darkness. People never wanted to host the almost dying pastor in their homes, since the hospitals were far, because they did not want to give police statements just in case he would die at night! He asked to be taken to church so that he would die their but one man took him in.
When he was fully recovered, the man w ho had attempted to kill him sent apologies to say that he was really sorry but William said he wanted to see him face to face. Another man offered William some advice concerning scaring the man. He gave William Ksh 2,000 to pay the police men to look for the man and by so doing the man would go to hiding and see the magnitude of the matter. William did so and it worked.
Few weeks later, the man came accompanied by his tribes men to offer an apology in form of money but the only thing the William wanted was to know why he was sentenced to death and now that he did not die, will his life be under threat since the man who had been paid to eliminate him had failed in his job?
The man said amidst tear s that he was so sorry and that he would not kill him and neither would he kill again because he wanted to receive Christ Jesus as his savior! Tears of pain and sorrow turned to joyful tears as William led the killer to accept Jesus.
As we speak, if William wanted to be the ruler of Gatirima, he could easily be selected because even those who sought to kill him, now love him and are the ones that are fighting alcoholism together with him. You cannot walk with William a short distance from his home, even at night without people standing to say hi, even in the darkness, they still recognize him, without him even knowing who they are, he just knows they must be knowing him. He is so popular.
Point is no matter how hard the opposition can get, just know that victory is assured in Christ. As we speak that man is a church elder in Pastor William’s church. Never give up no matter the setbacks. Keep your eyes unto Jesus . he will perfect your faith.
